Untangling the feelings and facts about this new world we’ve allowed ourselves to be a part of is difficult. Because I can empathize with the people that we begged to protect us after 9/11 I can absolutely understand the path we took to get this far in opposition to free expression, etc. What I can’t understand is why, now that we’re all aware of how far in excess the powers, the government has gone isn’t backtracking and starting to unravel these mechanisms.
The problem as I am understanding it right now is not that the government is “invading privacy” or “destroying the free press” as those are extensions of things that we (as citizens) demanded of our government do to protect us 10 years ago. What concerns me is why those in positions to do so are not immediately deconstructing these facilities that so clearly violate human and personal rights.
We shouted, “Keep us Safe!” and they did so. No we’re saying, “Too Safe!” and they are ignoring us.
